But one of the most powerful effects of movement happens somewhere else entirely.
When muscles contract, they release signalling molecules that travel to the brain.
Those signals stimulate the growth of new brain cells, support memory and regulate mood.
In menopause, declining oestrogen reduces some of the brain's natural protection.
When activity drops, the effect compounds.

The Question No One Was Asking About Exercise
When most people talk about why exercise is good for you, they focus on the heart.Or weight.Occasionally bone density.

Your Muscles Are an Endocrine Organ
Your skeletal muscles — the ones that help you walk, lift, swim, cycle and move through daily life — do far more than generate movement.
Every time a muscle contracts, it releases tiny chemical messengers into the bloodstream.
These molecules are called myokines.
Scientists have identified over 650 of these myokines — each carrying different instructions to organs throughout the body.
Some help regulate metabolism
Some reduce inflammation
Some support immune function
And a small but remarkable group send signals directly to the brain.
Meet BDNF — Your Brain's Growth Protein
Two of these muscle-derived messengers — irisin and cathepsin B — travel from your muscles to your brain, where they stimulate production of BDNF: Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor.
Neuroscientists call it 'Miracle-Gro for the brain.'
BDNF does four things your menopausal brain needs:
Grows new brain cells — particularly in the hippocampus, your memory and learning centre
Strengthens connections between neurons — so you can think clearly and retain information
Regulates mood — lower BDNF levels are consistently found in people with depression and anxiety
Protects against cognitive decline and neurodegenerative disease

Why This Hits Harder in Menopause
During the menopause transition, many women notice changes they were never warned about.

Many women assume something is wrong with them.

Oestradiol— the most biologically active form of oestrogen — directly supports BDNF production in the brain.
As oestradiol declines in perimenopause and menopause, BDNF levels fall with it.
Research using surgical oestrogen removal in animal models shows significant reductions in hippocampal BDNF — an effect that exercise can substantially restore.

This creates a double-decline that no one warns women about:
Declining oestradiol reduces the brain's hormonal support for BDNF
Fatigue, poor sleep and worsening symptoms often lead to less movement — removing the muscular contribution to BDNF at the same time
Neither decline is your fault.
And both can be supported — even something as simple as a daily walk begins to make a difference.
What Actually Moves the Needle
The research does not require you to train hard.It requires you to move consistently.
Aerobic exercise (walking, cycling, swimming, dancing) — 20 to 30 minutes, most days — is the primary driver of brain-protecting myokine release
Resistance training (weights, bands, bodyweight) — 2 to 3 sessions per week — adds independent benefits for brain health and mood
Both together is the gold standard — but starting with either is far better than waiting for the perfect plan
